Heart disease (Egyptian princess)

Egyptian princess is the oldest person with heart disease

The Egyptian princess Ahmose Meryet Amon is the oldest person known to have heart disease.
Researchers claim this based on recent scans of the mummy, which show that half of the princess’s arteries are calcified. The scientists assert that Ahmose Meryet Amon suffered from coronary arteriosclerosis, a condition in which arterial plaque can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
Ahmose Meryet Amon lived 3,500 years ago and died before her fiftieth birthday. She was laid to rest in the Deir el-Bahri temple along the Nile.

♦ Time machine
“If the princess were to come out of a time machine today, I would tell her to lose weight as quickly as possible,” says Professor Gregory Thomas from the University of California, Irvine. “After losing weight, she would need to undergo heart surgery. Specifically, she would require a double bypass.”

♦ Elite
The daughter of Pharaoh Seqenenre Tao II belonged to the elite, which meant she always had food at her disposal. In addition, she likely never worked, using fewer calories than the average Egyptian. It is therefore not surprising that she became very overweight.

♦ Hereditary?
Researchers found more mummies with damaged arteries. Although these people were likely the victims of a poor diet and little physical activity, scientists do not rule out the possibility that the heart disease is genetic. More research is needed to determine with certainty whether the heart disease is hereditary or not.
