♦ Diagnosis
Main symptoms: General enlargement of the thyroid gland.
Secondary symptoms: Female
Clinical diagnosis: Goiter (struma)

♦ Definition: goiter (struma)
The term refers to an enlargement of the thyroid gland and does not imply any change in function or any particular change in the tissue.

♦ Discussion
Goiter occurs occasionally, although it is more common in some parts of the world. In such cases, it is referred to as endemic goiter. Generally speaking, this occurs in regions that are far from the sea and therefore have an iodine deficiency.
This is the case in the mountainous regions of the Alps, the Himalayas, and in some central states in North America.

A goiter can put pressure on the windpipe, causing breathing difficulties, or on the esophagus, causing difficulty swallowing and sometimes hoarseness.
A goiter can also slip behind the breastbone and exert pressure there. This is called a plunging goiter.
